FAQ about VAE’s Internship

Why does VAE have an internship program?

VAE’s internship program is an extension of our core values. By offering a paid opportunity for emerging leaders in arts administration, we open ourselves up to bring different perspectives into the organization.

How do I submit more than one image with my application?

We suggest that you compile relevant images together in one PDF to upload through the application portal.

How many interns does VAE hire a year?

It varies year to year based on the organizations needs. This upcoming cohort of Summer-Fall interns will consist of 3 interns (one Exhibitions intern, one Programs intern, and one Communications intern). In 2020, VAE hired two Exhibitions interns and currently, VAE has one Communications intern.

No, we encourage anyone who is passionate about equity in the arts to apply.

Do I have to be a student at a college or university to apply?

Yes, the majority of your work will be completed remotely. Interns will have the opportunity to aid in exhibition installation if they choose to.

Can I work remotely?

Yes but the intern is responsible for coordinating with their college or university’s administration to ensure that the credit is valid. VAE’s staff will comply with the needs of administration as needed.

Can I complete VAE’s internship for school credit?

Will VAE give me a desktop or laptop to work on?

No, as this is a remote internship, we do ask that you BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). The majority of our team works with the mac OS but it is not required as we use Google Cloud services for the majority of our co-working needs.

Has VAE’s staff managed interns before?

Yes. Every member of our staff has managed at least one intern in their arts administration career.

What are the chances that I’d be hired at VAE after my internship is complete?

The chances are rather low but not entirely unlikely. VAE’s current staff structure does not yield any additional full time staff positions.

VAE’s former interns have gone into other internship opportunities in the field, have transitioned to job positions that offer a salary and competitive benefits, as well as gone to lead fulfilling freelance careers to sustain their creative practices.

What have VAE’s former interns gone on to do in their careers?
